[David Attenborough] Just 50 years ago, we finally ventured to the moon. [00:19]
For the very first time, we look back at our own planet. [00:39]
Since then, the human population has more than doubled. [00:52]
This series will celebrate the natural wonders that remain, and reveal what we must preserve to ensure people and nature thrive. [01:03]
When human beings built their first settlements some 10,000?years ago, the world around them, on the land and in the sea, was full of life. [01:35]
For generations, this stable Eden nurtured our growing civilizations . [02:05]
But now, in the space of just one human lifetime, all that has changed. [02:16]
In the last 50 years, wildlife populations have, on average, declined by 60 percent. [02:26]
For the first time in human history, the stability of nature can no longer be taken for granted. [02:36]
But the natural world is resilient . [02:55]
Great riches still remain. [02:59]
And with our help, the planet can recover. [03:07]
Never has it been more important to understand how the natural world works, and how to help it. [03:16]

Wildlife still flourishes in astonishing numbers in a few precious places. [03:46]
Along the Peruvian coast of South America, seabirds congregate in colonies millions strong. [03:59]
They come here to breed . [04:11]
Every morning, the birds leave their colonies to fish in one of the richest seas on Earth. [04:23]
It is an astonishing daily migration of five million birds. [04:40]
The huge flocks of cormorants and boobies are all seeking one thing: anchovies . [04:52]
The boobies carpet-bomb the shoals . [05:15]
More and more birds join the feeding frenzy . [05:27]
All in this immense assembly are here because a powerful oceanic current, the Humboldt, sweeps up from the Antarctic, bringing with it?rich nutrients from the ocean's depths. [06:11]

90 percent of the life in the oceans is found in the shallow seas close to the coast. [06:31]
Away from the land, the seas, for the most part, are a blue desert. [06:43]
But even these distant waters may be enriched by a most unexpected connection to the land. [06:50]
Some deserts, often hundreds of kilometers from the ocean, provide the raw materials for life. [07:02]
Every year, winds sweep up two billion tons of dust into the sky. [07:21]
At least a quarter of it eventually falls on the sea, providing nutrients needed by the microscopic organisms that are the foundations of ocean life. [07:31]
Dolphins explore the vast, open ocean in search of the riches that distant deserts may have nourished . [07:55]
A shoal of mackerel has discovered a swarm of krill... [08:12]
the small crustaceans that feed on the ocean's floating microscopic plants. [08:18]
But the mackerel themselves are food for the dolphins. [08:25]
They drive the mackerel towards the surface, and into the range of birds. [08:45]

The wings?that normally propel the birds through the air now drive them six meters down through the water. [08:56]
Whilst the birds pick off the top of the shoal... [09:10]
the dolphins attack the underside . [09:17]
After 20 minutes of feasting , the predators from both the sea and the air have had their fill. [09:55]
The stability of life on our planet relies on such connections between different habitats . [10:21]
Water evaporating from the surface of the sea condenses to form great clouds. [10:31]
And these?eventually release the fresh water as rain. [10:40]
But these life-giving rains are not evenly spread over the land. [10:50]
This vast salt pan in Africa is all that remains of an ancient lake. [11:04]
It's totally waterless and oven-hot. [11:14]
Few places on the land are more hostile to life. [11:18]
A few tracks cross it, made by animals searching unsuccessfully for water. [11:29]

But very occasionally, this whole landscape is transformed. [11:55]
A huge deluge drenches the salt pan. [12:20]
Triggered by some unknown signal, flocks of lesser flamingos arrive from thousands of kilometers away. [12:40]
The algae that the flamingos feed on have lain dormant as spores in the dust. [12:59]
But most importantly, the birds are here to breed. [13:10]
Perfect conditions?might occur only once in a decade. [13:17]
The birds nest?on an island far from the shore. [13:29]
They build mounds of mud that raise up their eggs and so keep them just marginally cooler than they would be at ground level. [13:34]
The water surrounding the island is so salty that predators do not venture into it. [13:47]
So the nests are safe. [13:53]
Thirty days later, thousands of chicks start to hatch . [14:00]
But there is no shelter from the scorching sun. [14:18]

The last to hatch step out into a desperately harsh world. [14:38]
[chicks cheeping] -[squawking] [14:46]
Somehow or other, the growing chicks must find fresh water to drink. [14:57]
[cheeping] -[squawking] [15:03]
They cannot yet fly, so they must walk, guided by some of the adults. [15:07]
They may have to trek for 50 kilometers. [15:26]
Some... cannot keep up. [16:01]
The salt has solidified around their legs. [16:09]
[squawking] -[splashing] [16:44]
Most of the chicks, in spite of everything, and having walked for days, eventually reach fresh water. [16:49]
It is the end of a long journey... [17:17]
but only the first of the trials that will be imposed on these flamingos by the irregularity of the rains. [17:21]
[rainfall] -[snorting] [17:33]
If rainfall ?is more predictable and certain, then life can flourish more richly , both in numbers and variety. [17:39]

The herds follow the seasonal rains, grazing on the newly-sprouting grass that comes in their wake. [18:02]
Each year, within a three-week period, the females give birth to over a quarter of a million calves. [18:20]
This youngster is just a few days old. [18:36]
Playing strengthens its legs for the long journey that lies ahead. [18:40]
The calf must stay close to its mother. [19:16]
Without her milk, it would starve. [19:19]
[snorting] -[grunting] [19:22]
And the herds are always traveling, following the rains as they drift across the plains in order to find fresh grazing. [19:26]
Eventually, they reach woodlands . [19:39]
Hunting dogs. [20:02]
Wildebeest calves are a favorite prey . [20:08]
And the dogs are hungry. [20:15]
The calf must stay with its mother, protected within the herd. [20:32]
The dogs have incredible stamina ... [21:19]
but the calf is defended by the herd. [21:25]
They need the calf on its own. [21:37]
The mother blocks the dogs, shielding her calf. [21:58]
It makes a run for safety. [22:09]
And it just manages to get back to the herd. [22:22]

The future of this whole migration depends on the regularity of the rains, but also on the continued existence of the great open grasslands across which the herds make their immense journeys. [22:52]
[insects chittering] -[birds calling] [23:11]
In places where rains fall abundantly throughout the year, forests grow, and in the warmth of the tropics , they support an unparalleled richness of life. [23:15]
Half of all the species of land-living animals live in these stable worlds. [23:32]
The sheer diversity is breathtaking . [23:41]
We still have not catalogued all the species?that live in the tropical forests. [23:50]
The relationships between them all are multitudinous and complex. [24:10]
Plants often depend on animals to pollinate their flowers. [24:22]
And these intimate connections are just as important as the great global ones. [24:30]
These are traps. [24:45]

[植]兰花;淡紫色;
Each red bucket is filled with an oily liquid that drips from above. [25:02]
Male orchid bees need a rich perfume with which to impress their females, and the orchids provide it. [25:12]
But the bucket is slippery , and the liquid into which the bee has fallen is sticky . [25:25]
The only way to get out is through a narrow tunnel. [25:39]
As it emerges , the bee is gripped tight. [25:47]
And that gives enough time for the plant to glue pollen sacs on the bee's back. [25:53]
So the orchid has its pollen taken to another plant... [26:03]
and the bee is rewarded with a perfume, with which, when it recovers its strength, it can woo a female. [26:10]
There are no pronounced seasons in a rainforest . [26:25]
It produces food in one form or another the year round. [26:32]
It's so rich that the females of some birds are able to raise their young entirely by themselves, and that allows the males?to spend their whole time attracting females... [26:41]

...as manakins do. [26:54]
There are over 50 different species, each with its own highly elaborate dance routine. [26:58]
The golden-collared manakin starts by clearing his dance floor. [27:11]
A female arrives and he starts his routine, rocketing from one perch to another. [27:25]
She checks out every detail. [27:35]
Finally, he performs his signature move. [27:47]
The back-flip... [27:52]
...with twist. [27:58]
Perfection . [28:04]
[cheeps] -[whir of wings] [28:06]
The red-capped manakin has a very different act. [28:09]
It's a kind of slither . [28:16]
With wing snaps . [28:28]
[cheep] -[snap] [28:35]
But it doesn't seem to be working. [28:43]
She's seen enough. [29:02]
The most complex routine is that developed by the blue manakin. [29:09]
The lead male is supported by three junior dancers. [29:15]
They practice together almost every day. [29:22]
During rehearsals , a young male in juvenile plumage stands in for the female. [29:28]

[calling] -[fluttering] [30:14]
The lead male performs the final move. [30:34]
Have they done enough? [30:42]
What's her decision? [30:45]
It's... [30:53]
a yes! [30:54]
A great team effort. [31:00]
Tropical forests cover only seven percent of the planet's lands. [31:07]
Away from the tropics, where the weather is seasonal and cooler, they're very different. [31:14]
The greatest of all is the boreal forest that extends right across?North America and Eurasia. [31:23]
It cannot grow during the frigid grip of winter. [31:38]
The forests are a crucial refuge for the relatively few species that are able to survive here. [31:46]
As winter approaches , caribou grazing on the open tundra to the north head south to the forest to seek food and shelter. [32:03]
Out here, temperatures may fall below minus 40 degrees centigrade. [32:25]
The forest will give some protection from the worst of the weather. [32:38]
But now the caribou are not traveling alone. [33:08]
carousel:n. (机场的)行李传送带; boreal:adj. 北(方)的;北风的;[B-] [希腊神话]北风之神的; frigid:adj. 性冷淡的;达不到性高潮的;寒冷的;严寒的; crucial:adj. 至关重要的;关键性的; approaches:n. 手段;接近;探讨;进路; v. 探讨;临近;处理;走近; (approaches是approach的第三人称单数) caribou:n. 北美驯鹿; tundra:n. 冻土地带;草原;[地质学,地理学]苔原;冻土层;
Wolves. [33:22]
They live in the forest year-round . [33:24]
And in the winter, they specialize in hunting caribou. [33:32]
They must find the freshest tracks. [33:51]
They move fast by avoiding the deep snow, sticking to the hard-packed trails made by the caribou. [34:05]
This wolf has found fresh scent. [34:18]
The caribou must be close. [34:31]
The herd chooses to stop to rest on a frozen lake. [34:43]
Out in the open,?they will be able to spot approaching danger. [34:50]
And sure enough, the wolves catch up. [34:58]
They start to test the caribou, probing for any weakness. [35:15]
Out on the open lake, the caribou can outrun the wolves... [35:33]
so the wolves drive them?back? into the forest. [35:45]
Here, in the deep snow, progress is much harder and slower. [35:56]
And, hidden by the trees, the wolves can get closer. [36:10]
The hunt is on. [36:20]
The pack must decide which particular caribou to target and which trail to take. [36:34]
As the caribou scatter , the leading wolf takes a wrong turn. [36:49]
It's a crucial mistake, and the wolves abandon the chase. [36:59]

With the coming of spring, the caribou will head north once more, leaving the wolves and the forest behind. [37:14]
They will travel 600 kilometers, crossing mountains to reach the tundra, where the spring grass will be sprouting again, and they can give birth. [37:24]
But these migrations are a shadow of what they once were. [37:37]
The herd has lost nearly 70 percent of its numbers in the last 20 years. [37:44]
Their world and all of our planet is now changing fast. [37:53]
At the furthest polar extremes lie the frozen wildernesses of Antarctica and the Arctic. [38:05]
Though they may seem remote to many of us, the stability of these icy wastes is crucial to all life on the planet. [38:18]
But in just 70 years, things have changed at a frightening pace. [38:33]
The polar regions are warming faster than any other part of the planet. [38:41]
The Arctic in the north is a frozen ocean, and the sea ice, on which all life here depends, is disappearing. [38:53]
