When you click Make Optional, an alert appears to ask you to confirm that you want the mandatory attribute to become an optional attribute. This is for your protection, because when an attribute is assigned to an object class as optional, it cannot be changed back to mandatory after the object class has been assigned to entries.
If you click Yes, the mandatory attribute becomes optional.
If you click No, the Make Optional request is canceled.
