Adding New Object Classes

Object classes are groups of attributes. You assign object classes to new entries as a means of assigning attributes. For more information about object classes, see Oracle Internet Directory Administrator's Guide.

The list of standard object classes from which you can choose attributes for entries may suffice for your organization. If not, you can create new object classes by adding them from scratch or by copying one from an existing object class and then changing it:

To add a new object class:

  1. In the navigator pane, expand Oracle Internet Directory Servers > directory server, and select Server Management.

  2. On the toolbar, click Create. The New Object Class dialog box appears.

Alternatively, to copy from an existing object class, in the Object Classes tab page in the right pane, select the object class you want to copy, then click Create-Like on the toolbar. The object class appears in a pane in which you can make changes.

  3. Give this new object class a Name.

  4. Assign an Object ID. This unique numeric identifier is based on standards from the IETF. Within those guidelines, your organization must have a method for assuring that every Object ID it assigns is unique.

  5. Fill in a Description. This field is optional.

  6. In the Type list box, select one of the following: Abstract, Structural, Auxiliary, None.

  7. Select the desired Super Class, Mandatory Attributes and Optional Attributes by clicking Add and selecting from the lists that appear. Note: Mandatory attributes must have non-null values for a Directory entry, but optional attributes may remain null.

  8. Save the new object class by clicking OK.
